Historic pubs in London

"The Dickens Inn" in London is a historic pub and restaurant located in the picturesque St. Katharine Docks near the Thames. It is a reconstructed building from the 18th century, originally used as a warehouse for tea or possibly as part of a brewery. In the 1970s, it was saved from demolition, carefully relocated, and converted into a three-story inn that attracts visitors from around the world with its rustic charm and unique location. The establishment is not directly related to Charles Dickens, but his great-grandson, Cedric Charles Dickens, ceremoniously opened it in 1976, stating that his famous ancestor would have loved the place – a connection that adds a romantic touch to the name.

Best restaurants in St. Katharine Docks

The restaurant spans three levels, each with its own character. The ground floor houses the "Tavern Bar," a traditional English pub with polished wooden floors and cozy tables known for its relaxed atmosphere. Above is a pizzeria tempting with homemade pizzas, while the second floor accommodates the "Grill," a more upscale restaurant with high wooden beams and nautical relics reminding of the maritime surroundings. The exterior appearance of the building is particularly striking: surrounded by lush flower boxes that transform it into a colorful spectacle in the summer, it offers balconies and a generous terrace overlooking the Docks, Tower Bridge, and the Shard.

Typical British pub dishes

Culinarily, "The Dickens Inn" reflects the diversity of British pub culture combined with international influences. In the Grill section, the "Fish & Chips" stands out – a classic with crispy batter, juicy fish, and thick fries served with mushy peas capturing the essence of British cuisine. Another highlight is the "Sunday Roast," served with succulent meat, Yorkshire pudding, and rich gravy, particularly popular on weekends. In the pizzeria, the "Margherita" impresses with its fresh dough and high-quality ingredients, while the Tavern Bar offers hearty pub dishes such as the "Steak & Ale Pie" – a savory pie that excels with its malty sauce and tender meat. Vegetarian options like a "Butternut Squash and Chickpea Curry" show that the menu caters to modern tastes as well.

Beautiful terraces with views

The drink selection is equally impressive. The Tavern Bar offers a wide range of real ales, including favorites like "London Pride" or "Greene King IPA" that pair perfectly with the rustic dishes. For cocktail enthusiasts, the bar offers a selection of classics, while the Grill section has a solid wine list elegantly accompanying the meals. Especially in the summer months, the terrace is a hotspot to enjoy the view with a cool pint, while the rooftop garden offers an intimate alternative for balmy evenings.

Friendly service in pubs

The ambiance is unique and multifaceted. The Tavern Bar exudes the warmth of a classic pub with its wooden elements and friendly faces, while the Grill section with its antique furniture and high ceilings adds a more upscale touch without appearing stuffy. The balconies and terrace are a dream in the summer, often filled with guests taking advantage of the idyllic location to watch the hustle and bustle in the harbor. In winter, the cozy interior provides a welcoming retreat. The venue also features the "Dickens Suite," a separate event space suitable for celebrations such as weddings or corporate events, impressing with its stylish decor.

The service is often praised as friendly and efficient, with the staff maintaining control even during busy times. The concept does not take reservations for smaller groups in the Tavern Bar, promoting a spontaneous atmosphere, but may require patience on busy days. For larger groups or the Grill section, booking is possible, making the visit more predictable. The restaurant is also dog-friendly, making it attractive for walkers in the area, and accommodates families, highlighting its versatility.

It was so amazing after a long city walk to sit down on the porch , enjoy the sunshine with a cold beer. Highly recommended!

W środku bardzo klimatycznie, jednak jedzenie jest... poprawne. Porcje potencjalnie duże, a w rzeczywistości większość to tłusta panierka. Drugi raz raczej bym się nie wybrała, ceny zupełnie nieadekwatne do jakości. Obsługa ok.

Lovely location, clean and well presented pub, bit expensive for a pint but that's the location! Give the cleaner a raise, nice to have pristine clean toilets!!!! Be nice to have some more local and small breweries on tap

Vi var där med en stor grupp, serveringspersonalen var vänliga och professionella. Vi åt en klassisk friterad kyckling det var gott. Rekommenderas.

Beautiful pub in the middle of St catherines dock, just a few steps away from the tower bridge. It tends to be very busy in the evening and during the weekends but it is lovely

Very disappointed after eventually visiting this historic place. First impression was the plastic flowers hanging outside, go without with the season rather than plastic. Lots of dirty tables when walking through to find a table. Ordered a pizza and loaded fries. The smallest bowl of chips for the price arrived with our pizza. The pizza itself was nice but the egg on the top was raw, still lots of uncooked white. I took it back which they replaced with a new well cooked pizza and a very rubbery over cooked egg. I wanted the runny yolk just not the raw white! Won't be coming back unfortunately.

No reception or table service for 1st floor diners and not recommended for silent talks or calm dates. Ground floor pub vibe is proper English pub vibe and all you could ask for with friends.
